Monsoon Rains

A couple of days ago, as I was standing under a plastic tarp while the skies did their best to soak everything in sight, it happened. I had a camera and a couple of lenses with me and was getting ready to dash for a shot when the tarp over my head suddenly ripped open dumping all the water that had been pooling up right on top of me.

Perfect!

The last few months have been extraordinarily wet and I was so busy with commercial work that I had not taken much time to go and explore the colours of the rains. Monsoon season is one of my favorite times of year as the air is cooler and the colours and textures are surreal, so it was that I had decided to take the day and go and follow my eye and enjoy the rains and their artwork.

I stood there, drenched and laughing as that was all there was to do.

The owner of the little tea shop whose tarp gave way was beyond apologetic. She kept offering me more tea and saying how terribly sorry she was about the unwarranted bath her store’s roof had bestowed on me. She must have thought me a tad odd as instead of being upset I was laughing at the honesty and richness of that moment.

That soaking was the perfect analogy of life here the Mekong delta during the Monsoon rains. They come on quickly, downpour with dramatic fury, and then trail off almost as quickly, leaving everything soaked and renewed.

A couple of emails and several hours under some fans and all the camera gear was back in working order and ready for more Monsoon colours.

Here are a few images of life with the Monsoon rains.

I look forward to seeing you out there. Keep dry!
